Deftones -- Nashville, TN -- March 15th, 2013

Deftones w/ Periphery
Nashville, TN 3-15-13
Marathon Music Works

I had not checked out Periphery very much but they had several fans in Nashville. They sounded like a mix of Killswitch Engage meets Meshuggah except not as good as either of those bands. Their songs were more progressive. Their lead guitarists sounded good when playing solos. The band had some energy but there weren't even any pits from where I was standing. They weren't bad but I just do not know their material well enough to say anything other than I don't see what the hype is about them.

Next up was Deftones. As usual they sounded great and Chino and Sergio had a ton of energy. While Abe and Frank can't move very much, Stephen chooses not to move at all but still kills it with his monster riffs.

If you have seen the Deftones in the last few years there is nothing new about seeing them on this tour other than the new songs. There is no need for them to change much as they are very good at what they do. The fact they are still releasing relevant, quality music with great sounding, energetic, intimate live performances speaks volumes.

My favorite albums by the band are Diamond Eyes, White Pony, Deftones and Koi No Yokan. I prefer the newer material. While the setlist wasn't bad I would have preferred to hear Entombed, Goon Squad or something else from KNY in place of some of the older songs at the end of the set. That would be my only complaint.

Diamond Eyes
Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)
My Own Summer (Shove It)
Rocket Skates
You've Seen the Butcher
Digital Bath
Swerve City
Around the Fur
Change (In the House of Flies)
Bloody Cape

Engine No. 9
7 Words
1-13 Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals

Yeah I was sorta disappointed with the lack of new songs in the setlist for the Boston show I saw. Bloody Cape is a sweet song to end the main set with though.

KSE and Meshuggah have never crossed my mind while listening to Periphery.

I really hope Deftones play that Toronto set when I see them. Don't care for the ST/SNW material
