M83 - Hurry Up, We're Dreaming (2011)

This is honestly one of the worst albums I've heard in years. I don't know what happened. I loved Before the Dawn Heals Us then never bought anymore of M83's albums until I got Saturdays=Youth a few weeks ago. It wasn't as good but it had some damn fine songs.

This though, this is total shit. The shoegaze and dream-pop is gone and is replaced with this fucking horrid pop...shit. I don't know what to call it. Grating vocals, terrible keyboards; I was going to compare it to Animal Collective (one of the worst bands of all-time) but that's a bit too far. It's just shit whatever this is. I knew Midnight City was a horrid song years ago but I thought it was maybe a misstep or something they tossed on to get radio play. Nope.

And double albums always suck. It's very rare you get two full discs of great music. But this shouldn't have even been a fucking double album to begin with. Disc one is thirty-seven minutes and disc two is thirty-five. And there are aboot six filler tracks. WTF?

I was thinking M83 could be a band named along my favourites but after hearing this piece of crap I'm thinking otherwise. I may go back and check out their pre-Before the Dawn Heals Us stuff and some of the stuff they released between that album and this. But this got one complete play in my car and shelved.

What a disappointment.

Big Brave - Au De La (2015)

This however is really good. They played a couple of shows with A Silver Mt. Zion a few months before recording it, Jessica Moss of that band does guest violin on a few songs and it was recorded at Hotel2Tango by Efrim Menuck; it's pretty obvious that they were in full bliss of being around them. They've gone from three minute songs to ten plus minute songs that are mostly ambient drones. And even their song titles now look like something from one of A Silver Mt. Zions albums. I can't blame them.

The drones are really good. This is an album that I'm disappointed I didn't hear two months earlier because it would have been near the top of my top ten last year.

I really wish the ASMZ/GY!BE people hadn't become so completely enamored with drone since the GY!BE reuniting.

I still haven't listened to this, didn't realize it came out that long ago. I like the albums prior to this though. I caught them live for this album and the show was killer, a lot better than I thought they'd be live.

You probably heard the single Midnight City because it got a lot of play. That song is one hundred percent representative of the album. If you could tolerate or liked that song you'd like the album. Because it's all that. The filler tracks are the only songs that sound like the older stuff.

What did you think? It's up next in my listening queue. I liked "Mesmerize" a lot, but that's all I've heard so far.

EDIT:

I've listened to the whole thing. It rules. No surprise there.

Insanity and dumb actions aside, this man can still craft amazing records.
