I believe if Testament had come out with The Legacy back in 1983 they would've been part of the big four, taking the place of Anthrax, who had an awful debut album. Luckily Anthrax recovered from the bad debut and came out with two classic albums in Spreading The Disease and Among The Living, earning their spot as one of the big four.

Testament never had a chance of being in it because by the time they came out with their debut in 1987, Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax had established themselves as the dominate and most popular bands of the genre. If there was a big 5 though Testament would be in it. Their album sales back in the late 80s and early 90s were just a little behind what Anthrax and Slayer were doing. Testament is the only band from back then who wasn't in the big four who could've made a legitimate claim that they should have been in it.

Overkill and Exodus was just never gonna happen. Regardless of how good their musical output was/is, they were just never popular enough to reach that status.

Anthrax is very underrated, that they changed lead singers too much is the only reason they aren't bigger, imho.

There's always been something very, I don't know..."empty" about Anthrax's music to me, if that makes sense. There's nothing terrible about them or anything (although I'm not a huge fan of Belladonna's voice), but any songs i've heard from, even the ones I really like such as "What Doesn't Die" (John Bush era, I know) and "Fight 'em Til you can't" just come across very basic and plain as if there's something missing, hence the "hollow" or "empty" feeling that I get.
