GOOD Free Recording Software?

I am planning on getting some good microphones and whatnot for recording, and was wondering if anyone out there has had any luck with any free recording software that is out there on the interwebz. If not free, than anything out there that is at least decently priced?

I downloaded Kristal, I think it was called, and haven't messed around with it much, but seems fairly easy and straightforward to use. I am just not sure if it'd do the job for something that is supposed to be professional.

I really want to save money, and time, for the next Dalla Nebbia release, and doing my own recordings would be the best idea by far.

Anyway, blah blah blah, any info is awesome

Audacity is good, but a DAW with non-destructive editing is definitely the best thing you could ever get for yourself. I don't think you're gonna find a free DAW with that feature though...
