Computer Shopping...

I know some of you guys are computer nerds, and I need a hand at finding something good.

I fear my laptop isn't going to hold up much longer, and I am going to be doing my own home recordings, so I figured it is time to shop around for a new computer, a desktop, and find something with the power to run my recordings, but not too expensive (e.g.: NO APPLE).

I am currently on Best Buy's site looking at refurbished ones, and I've found a couple pretty killer deals...

HP- http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP---Ref...d=mp1305634228

Dell - http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Dell---R...d=mp1304513159

But as always, just looking for some opinions and pointers. As of right now I am not looking for anything more than just something to record on. No gaming, no plans on installing anything extra (besides recording essentials), etc etc.

Thanks in advance

Are you gonna build your own? Or at least pick out all the parts? Or buy premade?

I would do a little shopping around. There are some PC-buying related subreddits on reddit where you can tell them what you want in a machine and your price range and they could help you out.

Dell are ALWAYS over-priced for the spec. Avoid.

Beyond that, it's pretty easy to compare and tell what's a good price and what isn't.

I have an HP desktop that I have no complaints about, and an Asus touchscreen laptop which is pretty decent.

Would avoid Toshiba, and Sony are over-priced.

Just be careful with refurbs. They can be really hit or miss. You might get something great or one with a shit battery, hard drive or screen; which can all be relatively common hardware problems with laptops.

If you get a refurb make sure it has some kind of warranty because its not worth the money you save if you're paying to get it fixed.

I just avoid refurbs. Computers aren't expensive enough anymore when you only need one to do basic stuff.

Honestly, get an eMachines.

I paid 330 bucks for my desktop in March 2010. 750 gig hard drive, Intel Dual Core 2.7GHz processor and 4GB RAM with the option to upgrade to 16GB. Still runs like new.
